Fuertes, hailing from Digos City, made headlines by defeating top-seeded Jason Battad in the semifinals with a commanding score of 6-3, 6-4. He then continued his impressive run by overcoming fourth seed Bench Neri in the final, clinching victory with a scoreline of 7-6(3), 6-2. This triumph in the boys’ 18-and-under category marked Fuertes’ ascension to the top spot, defying expectations and showcasing his undeniable talent on the court.
Meanwhile, Dhea Cua, an unranked player from Kidapawan City, delivered a stunning performance of her own. She navigated her way through a tough field, defeating higher-ranked opponents en route to the final. Cua’s journey included victories over Jasmen Kadalum, Sanschena Francisco, and Faith Lazaro in the semifinals. In a thrilling championship match, she emerged victorious against top seed Chelsea Bernaldez, securing the title with a score of 6-2, 6-4.
Fuertes further demonstrated his prowess by clinching the 16-and-under title with another impressive victory over Battad, cementing his status as a rising star in Philippine tennis.
The Gov. Edwin Jubahib Cup National Tennis Championships, presented by Dunlop and organized by Palawan Pawnshop under the leadership of president/CEO Bobby Castro, provided a platform for young talents like Fuertes and Cua to showcase their skills and compete against top players from across the country.
