Los Angeles Clippers guard Russell Westbrook has undergone surgery to repair his fractured left hand, as reported by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. The procedure took place on Monday following Westbrook’s injury during the Clippers’ recent victory over the Washington Wizards.
The 35-year-old Westbrook sustained the injury in the midst of a stellar season, having appeared in each of the Clippers’ first 58 games. Despite initially starting the season as part of the starting lineup, Westbrook seamlessly transitioned to a reserve role after head coach Tyronn Lue made changes to the rotation following the James Harden trade.
Even as a bench player, Westbrook continued to make a significant impact for the Clippers. Before his injury, he was averaging 10.5 points, 4.8 rebounds, and 4.2 assists in just over 21 minutes per game, showcasing his versatility and leadership on the court.
With Westbrook sidelined, the Clippers will miss his athleticism, energy, playmaking ability, and leadership, as highlighted by Harden. Westbrook’s absence will create opportunities for other players to step up, with 23-year-old Bones Hyland expected to see increased minutes in his absence.
