The Philippines has made a significant leap in the latest FIBA World rankings, climbing one spot to secure the 37th position, announced the basketball federation.
The updated world basketball rankings, released on February 27, reflect the recent performances of national teams in FIBA-sanctioned competitions. Gilas Pilipinas’ rise in the rankings follows an impressive showing in the first window of the FIBA continental qualifiers.
During the qualifiers, Gilas Pilipinas demonstrated its dominance by securing convincing victories over Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei. The Philippine squad delivered a commanding performance against Hong Kong, securing a resounding 94-64 victory. In another display of dominance, Gilas Pilipinas completely overwhelmed Chinese Taipei with a staggering 53-point victory, clinching a 106-53 win at home and finishing atop Group B play.
The next window of qualifiers is scheduled for November this year, providing Gilas Pilipinas with another opportunity to showcase its talent and compete on the international stage.
In the Asian region, the Philippines currently holds the eighth position, trailing behind powerhouse nations such as Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Iran, Lebanon, China, and Jordan.
At the global level, the United States maintains its position at the top of the rankings, with Spain closely following in second place. The FIBA World Cup champion Germany secures the third spot, while Serbia and Australia round out the top five.
The top 10 is completed by Latvia, Canada, Argentina, France, and Lithuania, representing a diverse mix of basketball talent from around the world.
