The Philippine Basketball Association (PBA) has imposed a fine of P100,000 on Magnolia forward Calvin Abueva for his disrespectful behavior towards San Miguel head coach Jorge Gallent during Game 2 of the 2023-24 PBA Commissioner’s Cup Finals.
The league announced the fine on Tuesday, just ahead of Game 3 scheduled for the following day at the Araneta Coliseum in Quezon City. According to PBA regulations, any individual who insults the dignity of another person due to physical disability is subject to a fine of not less than P100,000. Abueva’s actions fell under this category, leading to the penalty.
Despite the incident, San Miguel coach Jorge Gallent accepted Abueva’s apology, as confirmed by the PBA. Gallent and Abueva had a conversation later that night, where the Magnolia player expressed remorse for his actions.
While Abueva faced a hefty fine, the league opted not to impose any suspensions on the 6-foot-2 forward. This decision contrasts with previous incidents where Abueva served a lengthy suspension lasting approximately 16 months. These past suspensions were a result of altercations involving TNT import Terrence Jones and an incident with the then-girlfriend of Bobby Ray Parks Jr.
