National University (NU) Bulldogs kicked off their UAAP Season 86 baseball campaign in style with a dominant 16-3 victory over Adamson University Soaring Falcons on Sunday at the UP Baseball Field in Diliman.
Under the guidance of newly appointed head coach Romar Landicho, the Bulldogs showcased their potential with a commanding performance, marking a successful debut for the new coaching staff following the departure of long-time mentor Egay Delos Reyes.
One of the noticeable changes under Landicho’s leadership was the team’s improved mental toughness, as emphasized by the coach himself. Unlike in previous seasons, NU demonstrated composure and resilience, particularly in late innings, which played a crucial role in securing the victory.
Senior pitcher MJ Carolino, returning to the mound in full health, showcased his prowess by limiting Adamson’s offensive threats, allowing just three runs on seven hits over five and a half innings. His stellar performance set the tone for the Bulldogs’ defensive efforts throughout the game.
Offensively, NU’s lineup delivered an impressive display, led by shortstop Kevin Maulit, who contributed two hits in four at-bats, including three RBIs. Maulit’s timely hitting provided crucial runs for the Bulldogs, while Nigel Paule’s consistent performance with two hits helped ignite NU’s scoring spree.
Coach Landicho expressed satisfaction with the team’s performance in their season opener, highlighting the importance of establishing momentum early in the tournament. With a convincing win under their belt, the Bulldogs aim to build on their success and maintain their momentum throughout the season.
