Jonas Sultan Eyes Redemption: Set to Face Riko Masuda in Tokyo Showdown

Filipino bantamweight contender Jonas Sultan is gearing up for a crucial bout against Japanese prospect Riko Masuda on February 24 at the Ryogoku Kokugikan Gym in Tokyo. This matchup will be part of the undercard for the Jerwin Ancajas-Takuma Inoue title fight.

Sultan, determined to resume his quest for a world title, faces Masuda after his previous attempts were thwarted by setbacks in title bouts against Ancajas in 2018 and British boxer Paul Butler in 2022. With a victory over Masuda, Sultan aims to position himself for another shot at a world title eliminator.

Riko Masuda, a 26-year-old southpaw, comes into the fight with a reputation for his knockout power, having dispatched his first three opponents. Despite a recent loss to Seiya Tsutsumi, Masuda remains a dangerous opponent in the eyes of many.

Recognizing the threat posed by Masuda’s punching ability, Sultan is leaving no stone unturned in his preparation. Training rigorously under coach Marvin Somodio in Los Angeles, Sultan understands that the upcoming bantamweight eight-rounder could be a make-or-break moment for his career.

Representing the women are Aira Villegas, 28 (50kg), Claudine Veloso, 24 (54kg), Nesthy Petecio, 31 (57kg), Riza Pasuit, 31 (60kg), and Hergie Bacyadan, 29 (75kg). According to Manalo, this ten-member team completed a training session in Australia from January 14-27. They are scheduled to compete in the Boxam Tournament in Alicante, Spain, from January 29 to February 4.
