Far Eastern University (FEU) showcased a resilient performance to clinch its first victory in the UAAP Season 86 men’s football tournament, triumphing over the University of the Philippines (UP) with a 4-2 win on Sunday at the UP Diliman Football Stadium.
The Tamaraws’ impressive display propelled them to third place in the standings with three points after two matches, positioning them above the Fighting Maroons and below the UST Golden Booters.
FEU’s UAAP Season 85 Rookie of the Year, Karl Absalon, played a pivotal role in the midfield, delivering a stellar performance that influenced the outcome of the match. Absalon initiated the scoring for FEU with a well-placed cross that unfortunately resulted in an own goal by UP’s Orlan Togores in the 19th minute. Absalon then showcased his scoring prowess by finding the back of the net himself in the 53rd minute, extending FEU’s lead.
Despite UP’s persistent threats, FEU maintained its composure and capitalized on defensive lapses from the Fighting Maroons. Nickos Mamon capitalized on a defensive miscue to increase FEU’s lead to 3-1 in the 58th minute, further solidifying their advantage.
UP attempted to stage a comeback, with captain Marc Tobias pulling one goal back just three minutes after FEU’s third goal. However, FEU goalkeeper Jetrick Piolo Fabrigas denied UP’s attempt to narrow the gap by executing a crucial save against Tobias from the penalty spot.
Ramil Bation III managed to find the back of the net for UP in the 86th minute, but FEU sealed the victory with an insurance goal from Martini Rey in the 87th minute, capitalizing on another defensive lapse from UP.
With their first win secured, FEU looks to maintain their momentum as they face Ateneo de Manila University on March 7 at 6:30 p.m. on the same pitch.
