Mapua University’s basketball program is set to receive a significant boost as Cyril Gonzales, a former standout guard from the University of the Philippines (UP), is making his way back to his alma mater.
Gonzales, a 6-foot guard known for his skill and versatility on the court, bid farewell to the UP Fighting Maroons during an emotional dinner on Saturday evening, marking the end of his tenure with the team. In a heartfelt post shared on social media, Gonzales expressed gratitude for his time with UP, emphasizing the deep connection he formed with the university and its basketball program.
“The past few years have shown me what it’s like to be a true Fighting Maroon. UP wasn’t just a phase but a piece of my heart,” Gonzales wrote, reflecting on his journey with the team. “My thoughts are filled with a deep sense of respect and thankfulness as I sit here, realizing that my chapter fighting for the Maroons is coming to a close.”
Gonzales’ decision to leave UP marks a significant turning point in his basketball career as he prepares to return to Mapua University, where he initially honed his skills and made a name for himself as one of the brightest prospects in Philippine collegiate basketball. Under the guidance of head coach Randy Alcantara, Gonzales is poised to reunite with his former mentor and contribute to Mapua’s basketball program once again.
