Zavier Lucero, the promising rookie from the University of the Philippines, made his much-anticipated debut in the PBA on Friday, donning the colors of the NorthPort squad as they kicked off their campaign in the PBA Philippine Cup. Despite the Batang Pier falling short in an overtime thriller against the NLEX Road Warriors with a final score of 107-100, Lucero’s performance provided a silver lining for his team and fans alike.
Returning to competitive basketball after recovering from a season-ending ACL injury suffered during UAAP Season 85, Lucero displayed flashes of his potential on the court. In his debut game, the versatile forward contributed 13 points, eight rebounds, and four blocks, showcasing his ability to make an impact on both ends of the floor.
Reflecting on his comeback and debut performance, Lucero expressed satisfaction with his return to the game, emphasizing the importance of finding his rhythm and contributing to the team’s success. “It was a good introduction to basketball again. My first game back. Just trying to find my rhythm again and just help the team in any way I can,” Lucero remarked after the game.
Despite the loss, Lucero remained optimistic about his role within the team, acknowledging the challenge of integrating back into competitive play after a prolonged absence due to injury. “I felt good out there. I didn’t feel too windy or that. Just overall finding my rhythm again,” he stated. “It’s my first game in over a year so I’m just happy that I made it through and my knees are still intact.”
Lucero also expressed gratitude towards head coach Bonnie Tan for entrusting him with responsibilities on the court and allowing him the freedom to play his game. “He gives every one that he puts out there the trust to play their game. I’m out there and just trying to give my best to help the team win and do my best to find my spots and not force anything but convert on open opportunities,” Lucero praised his coach’s approach.
