In a thrilling showdown at the UP Diliman Football Stadium, the University of the East (UE) bounced back from its opening-day defeat with a remarkable 2-0 victory over Adamson University in the UAAP Season 86 Men’s Football Tournament.
The Red Warriors showcased their resilience and determination as they scored late twice to secure a well-deserved win. Eldrin Madrid broke the deadlock in the 72nd minute, capitalizing on an assist from Edmar Adonis to give UE the lead. Forward Keith Hermoso then sealed the victory for the Red Warriors with a goal in the 77th minute, sealing the team’s triumph from close range.
With this impressive win, UE climbed to third place in the standings with three points and a plus-1 goal difference, having secured one win and suffered one defeat in the tournament so far.
This victory marked a significant moment for UE under the guidance of its new head coach, Frank Muescan, who took over from Fitch Arboleda during the off-season. Muescan, a seasoned coach with championship experience, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, highlighting their ability to adapt to his coaching philosophy.
“I think before, the players were just adapting,” remarked Muescan, who previously led the University of the Philippines to championships in Seasons 71, 73, and 74. “This time, they are responding. Definitely, they are adapting to my concept.”
Muescan emphasized the noticeable improvement in the team’s gameplay, citing better control of tempo and an increased number of scoring chances created. He expressed optimism about the team’s trajectory and hoped to maintain their momentum going forward.
