Following Jerwin Ancajas’ recent setback in his quest for the WBA world bantamweight title, MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons remains optimistic about the Filipino boxer’s future in the ring.
Ancajas, 32, experienced the first knockout defeat of his career in a hard-fought bout against Takuma Inoue in Tokyo, Japan. Despite the loss, Gibbons believes that Ancajas still has plenty to offer and can bounce back from this setback.
“We have to talk to Jerwin. I think he has a lot left. The guy fought his a** off. It was one of those fights where it was kind of even and you got caught with a shot,” Gibbons stated.
Ancajas, who previously held the IBF world super flyweight title, made nine successful defenses of his title before suffering back-to-back defeats in 2022. Despite these challenges, Gibbons remains confident in Ancajas’ abilities.
“If he wants to continue, we find a way to get a win or two and let us get back to a title shot. That is it. That was what we did before and that is what we will do again,” Gibbons affirmed.
After the loss to Inoue, Ancajas bounced back with a victory over Wilner Soto via TKO in a tune-up bout, signaling his readiness to return to the world title picture. Gibbons emphasized Ancajas’ youthfulness at 32 years old and his potential to compete in either the bantamweight or super bantamweight divisions.
“We just have to work ourselves back around [at] 118 or 122 [pounds] whatever it may be. He is a young man, he is 32 years old, has a lot of fight left,” Gibbons concluded.
