Filipino basketball prospect AJ Edu is gearing up for his return to action in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in July after missing Gilas Pilipinas’ first event of the year.
Edu, who suffered a torn meniscus while playing for the Toyama Grouses in the Japan B. League back in December, will sit out the opening window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers this February.
“Hopefully, I’ll recover in a month or two and finish out my season in the B. League. I’ll be good to go for the OQTs,” Edu expressed during a press conference arranged by the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas.
Despite his absence from the initial qualifiers against Hong Kong and Chinese Taipei, Edu has been actively participating in practice sessions, eager to absorb the strategies and systems of head coach Tim Cone.
Joining the national team in their training camp at the Inspire Sports Academy in Laguna, the 6-foot-10 big man remains optimistic about his recovery and future contributions to the squad.
“Really blessed to have the opportunity to still be out here and support the team and just learn the system and what coach Tim has envisioned for this squad,” Edu remarked.
At 24 years old, Edu is considered a cornerstone of the national team program, alongside fellow young talents like Kai Sotto, Kevin Quiambao, Carl Tamayo, and Dwight Ramos. Together, they form a promising core expected to lead the Philippines in international competitions over the next few years.
With Cone planning to maintain a consistent lineup, combining both seasoned veterans from the PBA and emerging talents, Edu is excited about the team’s prospects moving forward.
