Filipino pole vaulter EJ Obiena is gearing up for his indoor season campaign as he intensifies his preparation for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
The 28-year-old athlete took to his social media accounts to announce his participation in three major tournaments, marking the beginning of his indoor season journey. The pinnacle of his upcoming competitions is the World Athletics Indoor Championships scheduled for March 3 in Glasgow, Scotland.
Before vying for glory in Scotland, Obiena will first showcase his skills in the Memorial Josip Gasparac on February 20 in Croatia. Following this, he will head to Berlin, Germany, to compete in the ISTAF Indoor on February 23. These tournaments serve as crucial stepping stones in Obiena’s quest for Olympic success.
Currently ranked second in the world, Obiena aims to use these events as part of his buildup for the Summer Games, set to commence in late July. With his sights set on Olympic gold, Obiena is leaving no stone unturned in his pursuit of excellence.
Obiena’s upcoming competitions mark his first foray into action for the new year. The Filipino vaulter enjoyed a stellar 2023 season, clinching multiple medals, including gold at the 19th Asian Games and the 32nd SEA Games. Additionally, he achieved the remarkable feat of joining the elite 6-meter club in two competitions last year.
