The Philippine flag will once again be proudly displayed on the international tennis scene as the country’s national under-14 boys and girls’ teams gear up for the ITF Junior World Team Tennis Championships in Sri Lanka from February 12 to 17.
This marks a significant milestone for Philippine tennis, as it signals the return of the national team to ITF competition following the reinstatement of the Philippine Tennis Association by the International Tennis Federation last month.
The Filipino youngsters will kick off their campaign in the pre-qualifying event held in Colombo, where they will face off against teams from over 25 countries. The pre-qualifying event commences on Monday, with both the boys’ and girls’ teams eager to make their mark on the international stage.
In the boys’ division, the Philippine team finds themselves in Group G alongside seventh seed Iraq and Myanmar. On the other hand, the girls’ team will compete in a challenging group featuring fourth seed Maldives, sixth seed Oman, and Myanmar.
With the top teams from each group advancing to the knockout quarterfinals, every match will be crucial for the Philippine contingent as they aim to progress further in the competition.
Following the ITF Junior World Team Tennis Championships, attention will shift to the Junior Davis Cup, where the 16-under boys and girls’ teams will have their turn to showcase their skills on the court in Sri Lanka.
