The highly anticipated 2024 PBA All-Star Weekend, set to take place in Bacolod City, is shaking things up this year by replacing the traditional Slam Dunk Contest with a brand new Skills Challenge. Scheduled for March 23, this exciting addition to the event lineup promises to bring a fresh dynamic to the festivities.
While the Slam Dunk Contest will be missed, fans can look forward to a thrilling three-point shootout among the league’s big men. This new twist aims to showcase the shooting prowess of some of the PBA’s tallest players, adding an element of surprise and excitement to the competition.
Defending champions Dave Marcelo and Paul Lee will return to defend their titles in the Obstacle Challenge and the three-point shootout among guards, respectively. However, the spotlight will also be on the new contenders vying for glory in these events.
In the long-distance shootout for big men, fans can expect to see sharpshooters like Jason Perkins (Phoenix), Brandon Ganuelas-Rosser (TNT), and Aris Dionisio (Magnolia) competing for the coveted crown. Rookies Ralph Cu (Barangay Ginebra) and Christian David (Blackwater) will also be looking to make a name for themselves on the big stage.
Meanwhile, in the three-point shootout for guards, reigning champion Paul Lee will face tough competition from seasoned players like Maverick Ahanmisi (Rain or Shine), Chris Newsome (Meralco), and Marcio Lassiter (San Miguel). With past champions like James Yap (Blackwater) in the mix, the competition is sure to be fierce.
In the Obstacle Challenge, Dave Marcelo will have his work cut out for him as he defends his title against a lineup of agile and versatile players, including Christian Standhardinger (Barangay Ginebra) and James Laput (Magnolia). With newcomers like Clifford Jopia and Brandon Bates eager to prove themselves, Marcelo will need to bring his A-game to stay on top.
